A Play In For Tamir Rice

November 23, 2015 Is the 1 year anniversary of 12 year old Tamir Rice’s death. He was killed by two Cleveland Police Officers Timothy Loehmann and Frank Garmback.

Join Project NIA and Black Lives Matter: Chicago for a Play-In for Tamir Rice. We invite children and youth ages 12 and above to PLAY in honor of the precious life that was lost to state violence.

There will be cooperative games, art-making, card-making for Tamir’s family and more.

Why a Play-In?
Tamir Rice was a 12 year old boy who was playing outside of a youth center when he was shot by a police officer who was responding to a call suggesting that a man with a gun was in the playground. Tamir was seen as a threat rather than as a child playing. Black children are too often denied the chance to simply play and to enjoy their childhoods free of the danger of violence. So, we will play for Tamir to underscore his humanity and to declare that we refuse to allow Black children to be robbed of play and fun.

What do we need?

  1. Food donations for dinner (including drinks, desserts etc)
  2. Artists who will co-create a memorial for Tamir on site.
  3. Singers and poets who want to share their voices.
  4. Volunteers to lead cooperative games, theater games, movement games and more.
  5. Organizations that want to co-sponsor the event.
  6. Organizations that will bring youth to the event.

Take Action:

  1. Sign the Rice Family’s petition here: http://act.colorofchange.org/sign/da-mcginty-step-aside/
  2. What was your favorite childhood toy? We will be COLLECTING TOYS for children with incarcerated parents. Please bring toys to DONATE.
